Implementation of EU legislation on “on-farm” animal welfare

The study “Implementation of EU legislation on ‘on-farm’ animal welfare: Potential EU added value from the introduction of animal welfare labelling requirements at EU level” by Arcadia International and ÖIR was presented in the European Parliament and published. The study was commissioned by the European Parliamentary Research Service to analyse the extent of implementation of EU legislation in the field of animal welfare on farms across the EU. This analysis included an evaluation of the EU legislation and a mapping of labelling schemes in Member States.

The ex-post evaluation of the EU legislation governing animal welfare was undertaken via desk research and literature review on animal welfare practices and their evolution in the EU over time. In addition, this ex-post evaluation was fed by EU level and Member State stakeholder interviews. The analysis of animal welfare systems in the EU Member States covered mandatory labelling schemes and initiatives, via desk research of academic and grey literature and an EU-27 online survey. ÖIR managed the contract and the process.
