Online workshop on unbalanced tourism growth in cities

We are pleased to invite you to an online workshop on overtourism in cities on 20.01 and 21.01.2022. The workshop is planned as a two-half day event, with an afternoon session on 20.01 and a morning session on 21.01.

The European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) and European Commission, Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW), commissioned a study investigating unbalanced tourism growth at EU destinations. This study, titled “Unbalanced tourism growth at destination level – root causes, impacts, existing solutions and good practices”, spans from December 2020 until June 2022.

The study aims to contribute to the dialogue among tourism stakeholders (DMOs, infrastructure providers, NGOs and other relevant actors) on the topic of sustainable tourism, by organising a series of workshops. These workshops aim to connect tourism stakeholders to foster peer-to-peer learning on problems and solutions to unbalanced tourism growth. Participants are invited to present examples of solutions to unsustainable tourism growth and its environmental and socio-economic impacts on the regions. Moreover, challenges and bottlenecks hindering the mitigation of unbalanced tourism growth are examined. Ultimately, the workshops focus on identifying concrete steps for destinations to move towards more sustainable practices and mitigate the impacts of unbalanced tourism growth.

This workshop on urban overtourism is moderated by Bernd Schuh, Helene Gorny and Arndt Münch from OIR together with Dagmar Lund-Durlacher (HNEE) and Fabian Weber (HSLU).

Afternoon session on 20.01 from 12:45 to 16:50 (CET) on the project findings on urban overtourism and peer-to-peer learning on problems and best practices among urban tourism stakeholders

Morning session on 21.01 from 09:00 to 12:40 (CET) on tailored and participative approaches to identify, assess and address overtourism impacts, in addition to world café discussions on key issues tied to overtourism

The two sessions are closely interlinked. As such, the project team recommends participating in both sessions. However, should you only be available for one of the two timeslots, please let us know.

In addition, the following workshops are planned, please let us know if you are interested in joining any of the workshops:

Coastal destinations workshop hosted in Palma de Mallorca, Spain on 23.02.2022

Rural destinations workshop hosted at the Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia on 17.03.2022
