Freight traffic in corridors – traffic growth until 2011

The study deals with the development of the Austrian freight traffic until 2011, putting the Danube corridor into the main focus. Additionally the report provides information on trends in other Austrian freight traffic corridors. This annually updated study gives a comprehensive overview of the development of the Austrian transportation markets available. The study was first published in 2007 and discusses the transportation market in a differentiated way by mode of transportation (rail, road, Danube), countries and corridors.

The financial and economic crisis has shown significant impact on the Austrian freight traffic as well. All modes of transportation were affected between 2008 and 2009 by noticeable declines in the volume of transport. Current data shows the recovery of the Austrian economy, between 2010 and 2011 the volume of transport (road, rail) increased again, the volume of 2007 had not been reached yet. The Danube recorded in 2010 a significant increase in transportation volume, although it suffered from September 2011 from exceptionally poor navigational conditions which limited its competitiveness.
